Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does participating take?
Participation does not add any extra time to the student's bar/bat mitzvah preparation.

What does it cost to participate?
There is no charge for participating. Donations are always welcomed.

How is Remember Us Project funded?
The Project is supported by donations from families and grants from foundations. We welcome foundations and individual supporters to join us in establishing this act of remembrance as an enduring Jewish ritual.

Who participates?
There are participating congregations all over America and overseas. It is being adopted in Jewish supplementary and day schools around the country. More than 27,000 children in more than 1,100 congregations worldwide have participated as of April 2012. There have been b’nai mitzvah in 14 countries and 39 of the United States.

Is it suitable for all denominations?
The program material has been reviewed and accepted by senior educators in the Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Orthodox denominations. We are always willing to work with an individual congregation to edit the material to be in accord with local needs.

How much information will I be sent about a lost child?
We send basic information about each child: name, parents, country where they lived, place of death, year (sometimes date) they died. Additional information can often be found on the Internet. At Yad Vashem.org can be found the database of people lost in the Holocaust. This is the primary source, and often the Page of Testimony (the written information from a family member or friend of the lost one) can be accessed. There is also plentiful background information on the places and times in which the children lived and died. Browser searches for people’s names, place names, and other keywords can often provide additional information, including maps and pictures.
